Toys for a Household With Both a Dog and a Cat
Plenty of homes here have both, and most of them get on fine. The friction that does occur is rarely dramatic — it is usually about resources and space rather than outright conflict, and toys are part of that picture.
Keep the toy boxes separate
Cat toys are small. A dog that finds a mouse-sized toy on the floor will very likely swallow it, and small soft toys are exactly the shape that lodges.
Dog chews present the mirror problem: heavy enough to be unpleasant if a cat gets involved, and hard enough to damage teeth that are not built for them.

The string rule is the important one
Wand toys, ribbon and elastic are the most serious hazard in a mixed household. Swallowed string causes linear foreign body obstruction in both species, and it is a surgical emergency.
Wand toys come out for a session and go away in a drawer afterwards. Not on the sofa, not on top of the bookcase — away. Wand toys and lures are under cat and catnip toys.
Play them separately
Dog play is loud, fast and physical. Cat play is precise and easily interrupted. A dog crashing through a wand toy session ends it, and repeated interruptions teach the cat not to bother.
Play with the cat somewhere the dog is not, ideally somewhere with height. Play with the dog separately, and be aware that a chase-motivated dog watching a cat play is being wound up rather than entertained.
Vertical space matters more than toys
The single most useful thing in a dog-and-cat household is not a product at all — it is a route the cat can use that the dog cannot. Shelves, a cat tree, the top of a wardrobe, a baby gate the cat can pass and the dog cannot.
A cat with a reliable escape route is a relaxed cat. One without will avoid shared rooms entirely, and that avoidance is often mistaken for the cat simply being aloof.
Feeding
Feed the two apart, and feed the cat somewhere elevated. Dogs eat cat food enthusiastically — it is richer and more palatable to them — and a cat that has to defend its bowl will eat less, eat faster, or stop eating in company.
The same applies to puzzle feeders: give each animal its own, in separate rooms. Puzzles concentrate value in one object and are exactly what gets guarded.
Interactive toys in a mixed household
Self-moving and laser toys are useful for cats when nobody is home, with a caveat: a dog will often join in, and a dog chasing a moving toy in the same room as a cat can escalate quickly.

Reading the room
Signs the arrangement is not working, in rough order of how early they appear:
- The cat stops using shared rooms, or only moves through them when the dog is asleep.
- The cat eats only at night.
- Litter box use changes, or accidents start.
- The dog fixates on the cat, staring or tracking rather than ignoring.
The first two are subtle and are the ones worth acting on. By the time there is an incident, the situation has been uncomfortable for some time.
Introductions, briefly
If the two are new to each other, keep them separated with scent swapping for the first week, then use a barrier they can see through, then supervised time with the dog on a lead. Reward the dog for ignoring the cat rather than for looking at it.
Give it weeks rather than days. Most pairs settle; the ones that do not usually needed more space and a slower start.
